While it might feel awkward talking about digestive issues, it is one of the most important aspects of good health.
As you can see from the list of conditions that we frequently treat, our society has created a laundry list of problems related to the process of digestion. While the types of disorders may be many, the root causes are typically narrowed down to factors such as unhealthy foods, infections, poor organ function, allergies or sensitivities, environmental chemicals and toxins. The typical approach of regular medicine is to treat digestive symptoms with pharmaceutical drugs. Just about every patient we treat has tried that approach before coming to see us. They are unhappy because the medications have not dealt with the underlying causes, which can even worsen while on the drugs.
When something is common we often think it's normal. But while digestive disorders may be common, they are definitely not normal for a healthy, well-functioning digestive tract.
For example, according to the National Institutes of Health, 20% of Americans—63 million people—suffer from chronic constipation. It is one of the most common medical problems in today’s society. Unfortunately, sometimes people do confuse common with normal. In fact, many of my patients have told us that their regular medical doctor said it was normal to have a bowel movement every three days! For each patient, our treatment protocol begins with a thorough history, which is where we put on our 'medical detective' hats so we can determine the best course of action. Digestive issues can be complex, and getting the right read requires an in-depth understanding of the causes behind the symptoms. The next step, typically, is laboratory testing. From there, we work closely with the patient to develop a healthy food plan and prescribe individualized vitamins, minerals, nutrients, herbs, tinctures, and homeopathics.
