While it might feel awkward talking about digestive issues, it is one of the most important aspects of good health.
From Dr. Taketa-Wong: “As you can see from the list of conditions that I frequently treat, our society has created a laundry list of problems related to the process of digestion. While the types of disorders may be many, the root causes are typically narrowed down to factors such as diet, infections, poor organ function, allergies or sensitivities, environmental chemicals and toxins.
“The typical approach of conventional medicine is to treat digestive conditions with pharmaceutical drugs. Just about every patient I treat has tried that approach before coming to see me. They are unhappy because the medications have not dealt with the underlying causes, which can even worsen while on the drugs.”
When something is common we often think it's normal. But while digestive disorders may be common, they are definitely not normal for a healthy, well-functioning digestive tract.
“For example, according to the National Institutes of Health, 20% of Americans—63 million people—suffer from chronic constipation. It is one of the most common medical problems in today’s society. Unfortunately, sometimes people do confuse common with normal. In fact, many of my patients have told me that their conventional medical doctor said it was normal to have a bowel movement every three days.
“For each patient, my treatment protocol begins with a thorough history, which is where I put on my 'medical detective' hat so I can determine the best course of action. Digestive issues can be complex, and getting the right read requires an in-depth understanding of the symptoms. The next step, typically, is laboratory testing, which I base on the outcome of my medical analysis. From there, I work closely with the patient to develop a plan for upgrading food choices and prescribe nutritional supplements, herbs, vitamins, and other natural approaches.”
