By addressing underlying causes and with ongoing dietary and lifestyle improvements and natural medicines, my patients have been able to significantly reduce or permanently eliminate headaches and migraines, even when they have been suffering from them for decades.
Headaches and migraines have a wide variety of causes, everything from dehydration to food and environmental allergies, to general inflammation. Hormonal imbalances, especially estrogen and progesterone imbalance can be behind menstrual migraines or headaches, as well as PMS and menstrual cramps.
Other underlying causes behind headaches and migraines include food sensitivities, stress, teeth grinding, tight muscles, anxiety, heavy metals and other toxins, autoimmune conditions and food additives. Food additives can include preservatives, MSG, food coloring, and artificial flavors and sweeteners, which are not natural and can be hard for the body to break down.
While our society's norm in treating headaches has become taking pain relieving medications, it is critical to find out what the underlying causes are in order to resolve the issue permanently. Many pain medications like Ibuprofen and Tylenol can cause liver problems if taken frequently on a long term basis.
In treating patients with headaches and migraines, I like to begin with a detailed history and find out what seems to trigger them and search out underlying causes. Often diet plays a big role, so working on improving that almost always helps to some extent, especially if there are food allergies or sensitivities. If there are high levels of heavy metals or other toxins, we work on detoxification. If there are hormonal imbalances, we use natural medicines to correct those imbalances. If the headaches are stress related, I teach my patients how to cope more effectively with stress. If there is an autoimmune condition, we use diet and natural medicines to work on regulating the immune system. I believe in doing lots of education and working with patients to solve their headaches. By addressing underlying causes and with ongoing dietary and lifestyle improvements, my patients have been able to significantly reduce or permanently eliminate migraines.
